Case Study: the Super Scooter JASON GRAMITT Case Summary Honda Motorcycles developed a new model of scooter intended for young people and low-income households. The desired characteristics of the scooter are: low price (up to $500), low fuel consumption (about 150 miles per gallon), weight less than 75 pounds so that the vehicle could be carried indoors, and speed up to 55 mph. Honda Motorcycles invested into the development of such Super-Scooter, and the first set of 30,000 scooters was manufactured. The scooters were ready to market, but their safety check identified a serious security issue. In order to reduce weight, the gas tank was made of thin aluminum that might easily be ruptured, and even lead to inflammation or explosion. The estimates of the safety commission and accounting department are the following. If the company decides to go on and sell Super-Scooters in the current condition, the expected number of serious burn cases would be 3, and the expected number of explosions would be 1. The explosion would most likely cause the death of the driver. Overall cost of these incidents to the company would be $1,650,000 ($50,000 per each serious burn case and $1,500,000 for the explosion case). The costs of fixing the defect would be $100 per each scooter, i.e. additional $3,000,000 for the whole set.
